PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: Discuss priorities and responsibilities of No test items
20.1.2 corrections officers during an emergency
situation considering the following:
• The safety and protection of the general public
• The safety and welfare of any hostage
• Safeguarding of personnel to prevent
injuries or loss of life
• Isolation and protection of those inmates not
directly involved in the emergency

For any specific emergency you will need to follow your own agencies policies and procedures,
However there are some general approaches you can take:
a. Maintain the safety and protection of the general public.
b. Hostages —any staff member, citizen or inmate held against their will by another person
For the purpose of escape, monetary gain or any reason which may place an individual
in danger of losing life or suffering serious injury.

2. Based on a study of 52 fires in Correctional Facilities from Jan 67 to
July 77 the Nation Fire Protection Agency developed a model
correctional fire.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: Explain the major mistakes involved in the use 3 Test Items
20.2.9 of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
• Not recognizing the need for safety of person
using SCBA
• Putting on mask before turning on oxygen
• Failure to heed warning alarm indicating oxygen
is running out
• Failure to put back SCBA in proper position and/or not
refilling
• Failure to practice regularly (i.e., every 30 days)
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate the use of self-contained breathing Behavioral Skills
20.2.11 apparatus (SCBA). In approximately 60 seconds, Test #33
trainees must:
• Put on tank with straps
• Turn on air
• Put on and secure mask
• Get air through unit
• Keep on for approximately 5 minutes
• Accurately read gauge
1. Safety of person using SCBA
a. consider the totality of the circumstances before attempting to
extinguish the fire
b. Putting mask on before turning on air may cause person to panic.
Especially those that are claustrophobic.
C. Warning bell indicates approx. 5 minutes of air left.

2. Donning and preparing the self contained breathing apparatus.
a. Lift the unit out of the case or from the rack
b. Check the high-pressure hose for tightness
C. Check the cam lock to see that the cylinder and the unit are
secured together.

f. Fasten and tighten waist strap
g. Open and lock main valve
h. Close by-pass valve
