1. When conducting a search it is important to have a systematic plan developed.
Every time you conduct a search you should use the same plan, method, etc.
Items to consider
a. Insure you have the proper tools
b. Have a plan pre -established for the movement of inmates.
C. Search of individual inmates.
d. Know the number of personnel necessary.
e. Removal of inmates from search area
f. Always work around the room systematically, develop
the plan with staff before going in to complete the search
g. Removal of contraband
h. Ensure officers determine to whom contraband belonged
i. Pictures as evidence --Also useful to show other staff members
of types of contraband being found in your facility.
j. Return of inmates --Be prepared for hostility
k. Report writing --Incident vs. crime report

2. When conducting searches always remember to maintain the civil
rights of inmates and act in accordance with policy and
procedure to prevent any chance of legal liability.,

3. It is a good idea to keep an inventory of the tools you take in with
you for the search and re -inventory when you leave to ensure you
took everything out with you.
4. Storing search tools in a central location also assists staff to readily
access them and return them.
