REFERENCE: Fresno County Sheriff's Office Policies and Procedures Sections 600
and 1007; Department Order 785; Fresno County Personnel Rule 10, Section
#10078; Fresno County Salary Resolution, Section 615.2; and Labor Code
Section 246.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this policy is to establish and maintain consistent methods to report the
punctuality and attendance of all Jail Division employees.
POLICY:
It is the policy of the Fresno County Sheriffs Office that each supervisor shall monitor and
regularly review the attendance of the employees under their command.
It is the policy of the Fresno County Sheriffs Office Jail Division that all employees shall
be punctual in reporting for duty at the designated time and place. Staff members
reporting late for duty shall submit a memo to their supervisor stating the reason for their
tardiness. Habitual failure to report promptly at the time designated shall be deemed
neglect of duty.
It is the policy of the Fresno County Sheriffs Office Jail Division that when any employee
assigned to the Jail Operations Bureau is off duty due to illness or injury to themselves or
their immediate family, they shall personally report that fact to the on-duty Administrative
Sergeant via telephone. Employees assigned to the Jail Medical & Services Bureau shall
report that fact to their assigned supervisor.
PROCEDURES:
I. PUNCTUALITY
A. Each employee required to attend briefing shall be in the appropriate
Briefing Room, in their regulation uniform at the established beginning of
shift briefing time, ready to receive information.

B. Employees not required to attend briefing (e.g., officers assigned to
specialty units) shall be expected to be at their designated duty station at
the start of their assigned shift, ready to begin work.
C. An employee who will knowingly report late for work shall notify the on-
duty Administrative Sergeant and advise them of the reason for the delay,
along with an estimated time of arrival.
D. As soon as possible, the employee shall report to their assigned duty
station, and notify both the Administrative Sergeant and their Facility
Sergeant that they have arrived and are reporting for duty.
E. Employees shall be required to submit a memo to their Watch
Commander explaining the reason they were late to work, on any day
they are late reporting for duty.
1. The memo must be submitted prior to the end of the shift.
2. Employees are aware of this requirement and are expected to submit
the memo without prompting.
F. Dock time shall be utilized in reporting the time discrepancy on the
employee's payroll sheet.
II. ABSENCE DUE TO ILLNESS OR INJURY
A. Sick time may only be used for qualified absences (i.e., when an
employee is unable to work due to personal illness or injury, or a member
of the employee's immediate family is ill/injured and the employee must
care for that individual).
B. Employees are required to call and notify the Administrative Sergeant as
soon as they are aware they will not be able to work due to personal or
family illness/injury.
C. While absent due to illness or injury, the employee shall remain at their
residence or place of confinement unless otherwise specifically
authorized by a physician. The employee shall advise the on-duty
Administrative Sergeant of their place of confinement.
D. No employee shall feign illness or injury or in any other way deceive a
representative of the Sheriff's Office as to their real condition.

E. Sick leave is not considered vacation and abuse of sick leave may result
in discipline, denial of sick leave benefits, or both.
III. TRAINING
The Fresno County Sheriff's Office provides continuing professional training
to employees on a year-round basis. All personnel are required to attend
training, as scheduled.
A. Failure to attend a scheduled training session is equivalent to failing to
work an assigned duty shift. Employees who are absent from training
without a valid reason must submit a memo of explanation to their
respective Bureau Commander.
B. Employees who report late for training shall submit a memo to the
Training Sergeant stating the reason for their tardiness. The memo shall
be forwarded to the employee's Watch Commander.
IV. DOCTOR'S STATEMENT
In any instance where deemed warranted, an employee may be required to
submit a statement from a California licensed physician setting forth the
specifics which necessitate the employee's absence for illness or injury
purposes.
