MEB Basic Fresno County Sheriff – Coroner’s Office EXPANDABLE BATON COURSE Lesson Plan LESSON PLAN T IME T OPIC I NSTRUCTOR N OTES Introduction  Instructor & Student Introductions  Objective of MEB Basic Course  MEB Basic Course Paperwork and Course Safety Rules Definitions & Baton Nomenclature  Strong: Hand, Foot and Side Instructor:  Support: Hand, Foot and Side Go over all definitions and  Long End baton nomenclature with the  Long Portion students.  Grip Portion  Grip End  Baton Opening & Closing Procedures T IME T OPIC I NSTRUCTOR N OTES Review the different zones Monadnock Baton Chart T IME T OPIC I NSTRUCTOR N OTES Instructor: Demonstrate the stance and Stance & Patterns of Movement then each Pattern of Movement for the students  Stance and then have them practice  Shuffle: Forward and Rear (w/direction) each movement.  Pivot: Forward and Rear Making sure that the students  Sidestep: Strong and Support continue to maintain balance and finish with the proper stance. Break Instructor: Baton Grips & Baton Methods of Carry Demonstrate the stance and  Grip: One-Hand and Two-Handed then each Pattern of  One-hand Carry: Vertical and Outside-the- Movement for the students Arm and then have them practice  Two-Hand: Two-handed Long Grip Carry (w/direction). Instructor: Demonstrate the draws for the students and then have them Baton Draws practice (w/direction) each  Cross Draw draw.  Strong Side Draw Making sure that the students continue to maintain balance and finish with the proper stance. T IME T OPIC I NSTRUCTOR N OTES Instructor: Two-Handed Blocks Demonstrate each of the  High Block blocks for the students and then have them practice  Strong-side Block (w/direction) each block.  Support-side Block Making sure that the students  Middle Block continue to maintain balance and finish with the proper  Low Block stance. Break Instructor: Demonstrate each of the strikes for the students and One-Handed Strikes then have them practice  Forward Strike (w/direction) each strike.  Reverse Strike Making sure that the students continue to maintain balance and finish with the proper stance. Instructor: Demonstrate each of the Two-Handed Strikes strikes for the students and  Jabs: Front and Rear then have them practice (w/direction) each strike.  Horizontal Strikes: Strong-side and Support-side. Making sure that the students continue to maintain balance  Middle Strike and finish with the proper stance. T IME T OPIC I NSTRUCTOR N OTES Instructor: Demonstrate each of the Baton Retention retentions for the students and  1 or 2 Hand Grab Defense for One-Hand then have them practice Grip (w/direction) each retention.  1 or 2 Hand Grab Defense for Two-Making sure that the students Handed Grip continue to maintain balance and finish with the proper stance. MEB Basic Course Proficiency Test  Passing Score – ACCEPTABLE rating on each technique listed on the MEB Basic Course Proficiency Test MEB Basic Course Written Test  Passing score is at least 70 percent  Minimum number of questions is 15
