Discuss security measures when transporting inmates outside of the facility. A. Don’t allow any person(s) to talk to the inmate. B. Maintain inmate in you custody at all times. C. Ensure the area is secure. D. Don’t get distracted by public or environment. E. Follow your agencies policy regarding application and removal of restraints. 2. Review P. C. 4570 and P. C. 4570.1 regarding unauthorized communications with inmates. UNIT 19 LESSON PLAN TRANSPORT UNIT PRESENTATION AND OUTLINE NOTES 7 19.2.2 2 test items PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: Identify principles for transporting women, protective custody, and disabled inmates. 1. Women A. Ensure search by female officer. B. Give mileage. C. Transport with two officers whenever possible. D. Remember they can be as dangerous as male inmates – don’t get complacent. 2. Disabled A. Use a wheelchair or walker as necessary. B. Don’t embarrass. C. Ensure they are searched. D. Apply restraints as reasonable and necessary. E. Use ambulance or handicap equipped vehicle when available or necessary. F. Use appropriate security measures. G. Use handicapped entrances or accesses. 3. Protective custody A. Transport like classifications. B. Ensure they are searched. C. Keep separate from general population. D. Don’t discuss status with others. E. Be aware of suspicious persons enroute or when you arrive to your destination. F. Use good security measures. G. Vary your route as allowed by agency policy and procedure. Remember that inmates always watch your actions/inactions and if you take someone out on a transportation run they will know your habits better than you do. 3. No test items PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: Discuss problems that can occur during transport. For example:  Vehicle breakdown/accidents  Inmate assaults  Manipulation by inmates (possible faked illness)  Rendering aid to private citizens 1. Vehicle breakdown/accidents. A. Radio dispatcher of type of problem and location. 10 B. Be aware of citizen involvement - good or bad. C. Maintain security of inmate. D. If accident, do you or inmate need medical attention? E. If breakdown, will you need another transport officer to take over for you? F. Ensure appropriate persons are notified that inmate will be late to destination. 2. Inmate assaults. A. Radio for backup. B. Wait for backup to assist you. Assault may be ruse. C. Determine if medical aid is necessary. D. Determine if either inmate wants to press charges. 3.
